The Smile is an English rock band formed by Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, along with drummer Tom Skinner. The band incorporates elements of post-punk, progressive rock, Afrobeat, and electronic music.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, The Smile made a surprise debut in a streamed performance by Glastonbury Festival in May 2021. In early 2022, they released six singles and performed live in London. Their debut album, "A Light for Attracting Attention," was released in May 2022 to critical acclaim. The Smile toured Europe and North America in 2022 and 2023, releasing live EPs from their performances.
In March 2023, they confirmed work on their second album, "Wall of Eyes," and released its first single, "Bending Hectic." The Smile's music incorporates unique melodies, unusual time signatures, and a blend of vintage rock sensibilities. Critics have likened their sound to Radiohead but note a distinctive, more skeletal and knottier version. The band's second album is set for release in January 2024, accompanied by a European tour and appearances at the BBC 6 Music Festival.
