The Undertones, a rock band hailing from Derry, Northern Ireland, was formed in 1974 and remained active until their initial disbandment in 1983. The classic lineup consisted of Feargal Sharkey (vocals), John O'Neill (rhythm guitar, vocals), Damian O'Neill (lead guitar, vocals), Michael Bradley (bass, vocals), and Billy Doherty (drums). The band's early material drew influence from punk rock and new wave but evolved to incorporate elements of rock, glam rock, and post-punk.
Despite the tumultuous backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Undertones focused their lyrical themes on topics such as adolescence, teenage angst, and heartbreak rather than the political climate. The band gained significant attention with their debut EP "Teenage Kicks," recorded in 1978 and championed by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel.
Sire Records, impressed by "Teenage Kicks," signed the Undertones, leading to their notable appearance on Top of the Pops and the subsequent release of their eponymous debut album in 1979. The band's infectious pop punk sound gained popularity, and they toured extensively in the UK and the United States.
The Undertones continued their success with the release of "Hypnotised" in 1980, featuring hits like "My Perfect Cousin" and "Wednesday Week." The year 1980 marked their most commercially successful period, with critical acclaim and high chart rankings.
In 1981, the Undertones shifted to EMI and released "Positive Touch," showcasing a change in musical and lyrical influences. The band experimented with instruments like pianos and saxophones, and some songs addressed the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Their 1982 activity slowed, and by 1983, internal tensions and external pressures led to Feargal Sharkey's announcement of his departure during the 'European Tour 1983.' The Undertones disbanded in mid-1983, concluding with a final concert in July.
Post-disbandment, Feargal Sharkey had a brief solo career. John and Damian O'Neill formed That Petrol Emotion in 1984. The Undertones reunited in 1999 with Paul McLoone as the new lead vocalist. They continued touring and released albums, including "Get What You Need" (2003) and "Dig Yourself Deep" (2007). Notable post-reunion moments include performing at Glastonbury Festival and releasing new material, such as the double A-side single "Much Too Late / When It Hurts I Count To Ten" in 2013. The Undertones have remained an enduring presence in the music scene, celebrating their iconic status and contributing to the post-punk and punk revival.
