The first incarnation of the View was a school covers band, performing at school talent contests. They decided to start writing their own music after their head teacher showed an interest, and they started playing at various weddings and small venues.
They were signed to a local independent record label, on which they released The View EP in early 2006. They recorded a demo album as well, which was made available for download from the band’s website. The EP caught the attention of Radio 1 DJs such as Edith Bowman, Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley, and songs from the album began receiving airplay. Zane Lowe invited the band to perform the single Wasted Little DJs live on his show alongside more established bands such as the Kooks. After this, the single was played regularly on Radio 1 and XFM.
In mid-2006 they began work on their debut album with producer Owen Morris, who had previously worked with Oasis and the Verve. The first single, Wasted Little DJs, was released on August 7 2006 and was followed by Superstar Tradesman. Both singles reached number 15. They embarked on a tour that year, with View tickets selling for dates in Tokyo, Japan and the USA as well as the UK.
The third single, Same Jeans, was released the week before the album on January 15 2007. It became their most successful single to date, charting at number three and majorly raising interest in The View tickets.
Their second album, Which Bitch?, was released in February 2009. It didn’t replicate the success of their debut, possibly because of the change in direction, and the reviews were mixed. Despite this, it entered the chart at number four, with three singles released: 5Rebeccas, Shock Horror and Temptation Dice. The View tickets were still in demand from their fans.
Their third album is expected at the end of 2010, and is rumoured to contain songs that are more similar to Hats off to the Buskers’ contents. View tickets for the supporting tour are doubtless going to popular after their festival appearances in the summer, including slots at T in the Park and Reading and Leeds.
