The Zutons, an English indie rock band formed in Liverpool in 2001, initially comprised singer and guitarist Dave McCabe, drummer Sean Payne, and saxophonist Abi Harding. Taking inspiration from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band guitarist Zoot Horn Rollo, they adopted the name "The Zutons." Dave McCabe, who had previous experience with the band Tramp Attack, teamed up with Sean Payne and Abi Harding, later adding guitarist Boyan Chowdhury.
The Zutons gained recognition with their debut album, "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" in April 2004, blending psychedelic, punk, and soul influences. The album's 3-D cover and accompanying glasses contributed to its unique presentation. The band's music defied easy categorization, described as "psychedelic cartoon punk."
"Tired of Hanging Around" (2006) featured hit singles "Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?" and "Valerie," the latter achieving chart success. The Zutons continued touring, performing at festivals and gaining acclaim for their energetic live shows.
Following guitarist Boyan Chowdhury's departure in 2007, Paul Molloy joined the band for their third album, "You Can Do Anything" (2008). Despite chart success, The Zutons quietly disbanded in 2009. Post-split, members pursued various projects, with Dave McCabe releasing a solo album in 2015.
In 2016, the original lineup reunited for a tribute concert and later announced a one-off gig in memory of their friend Kristian Ealey. They embarked on a reunion tour in 2018, marking the 15th anniversary of their debut album. The band, excluding Russell Pritchard, who was replaced by Jay Lewis, played "Who Killed...... The Zutons?" on the tour.
In 2021, The Zutons revealed plans to support Nile Rodgers on tour and announced Rodgers as the producer for their fourth studio album, "The Big Decider," set for release in April 2024.
