These New Puritans, otherwise known as TNPS, initially formed in Southend-on-Sea where they are still based and still perform regularly. The band consists of Jack Barnett on lead vocals, who doubles as a songwriter and producer for the band, also playing several instruments, and his twin brother George who plays drums and handles the loops. Thomas Hein is the bass guitarist who also plays additional drums and is responsible for bringing in the samples, with Sophie Sleigh-Johnson taking care of the other samples and playing keyboards. Their first album, Beat Pyramid, was released in 2008, followed up by their 2010 release, Hidden, with These New Puritans tickets being sold to promote the release.
According to Jack Barnett, the unique art rock and hip hop fusion sound for their first album was based upon the Wu-Tang Clan, and also drew upon various electronic music influences, such as Aphex Twin and the cartoon series The Smurfs. Their first album was described by the publication, Artrocker, as “a melding of Sheffield and Berlin synths, 90s alt rock Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo drones, Underworld beats, and all in the most contemporary of contexts.”
These New Puritans have a unique style that is very much influenced by whatever instrument the band members happen to be learning at a given time, in much the same way that Tom Waits features unique and often unheard of instruments on each of his albums. Prior to the second album, Jack Barnett said that he had been learning the bassoon and had been writing music specifically for the instrument. In 2010, in an interview with C.B. Liddell, he revealed that he was currently obsessed with Melanesian music and that the next These New Puritans album would be heavily influenced by that sound and would be significantly softer.
These New Puritans are credited with popularizing the local music scene in their hometown and have played a supporting role for a variety of local bands, ranging from The Kills, to Crystal Castles and British Sea Power. They worked closely with designer, Heidi Slimane, on her Dior Homme Hiver 2007 show, and wrote the music for Navigate, Navigate specifically for the event. Currently they are selling the best These New Puritans tickets throughout Europe and the United Kingdom for various festivals, in support of their latest release.
