Timothy Mark Vine (born 4 March 1967) is an English comedian, actor, writer, and presenter best known for his quick-fire one-liners and his role on the sitcom Not Going Out (2006–2014). He has released several stand-up comedy specials and written multiple joke books.
Born in Cheam, London, Vine is the son of Diana, a housewife and part-time doctor's receptionist, and Guy Vine, a civil engineering lecturer. He is the younger brother of broadcaster Jeremy Vine and older brother of artist Sonya Vine. He was educated in Surrey at Lynton Prep in Ewell, Aberdour School in Burgh Heath, and Epsom College.
Vine began his stand-up career performing open mic nights with a colleague from his office job in Croydon. He honed his routine at the Comedy Café in London and became a regular on the London comedy circuit by 1994. He gained recognition for his one-liners and puns, eventually making his first TV appearance on BBC1's Pebble Mill.
In 1993, Vine placed second in the Hackney Empire New Act competition. His career gained further momentum when he met Lee Mack in 1996, leading to collaborations on The Sketch Show, Not Going Out, and Let's Play Darts for Comic Relief.Vine's notable achievements include holding the Guinness World Record from 2004 to 2014 for the most jokes told in an hour (499 jokes) and winning the award for best joke at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010 and 2014. He has toured extensively with shows such as Current Puns, Punslinger, and The Joke-amotive, releasing several DVDs of his performances.
Vine's television credits include hosting game shows like Whittle and Fluke, and starring in ITV's The Sketch Show. He played Timothy Gladstone Adams in Not Going Out from 2006 to 2012, with cameo appearances in later episodes. Vine has also appeared on Countdown, The Chase, and Taskmaster, and hosted the game show Football Genius.
His radio work includes The Tim Vine Chat Show on BBC Radio 4, where he interviews audience members. This show has aired multiple series and specials since 2016.
Vine has published several joke books, including The Biggest Ever Tim Vine Joke Book and The Tim Vine Bumper Book of Silliness. Additionally, he has released novelty music albums and performed as his alter ego, Plastic Elvis, paying tribute to Elvis Presley.
