Considered as one of the defining bands of the British New Wave and New Romantic movement of the early 1980s, when electronic pop music took the world by storm, Ultravox are a band with an extremely complex history that has seen the group disband and reform a number of times over the years. There have been dramatic changes in membership, direction and style, since the initial formation in 1973.
Ultravox were first known as Tiger Lily, when they were formed by a vocalist and songwriter, Dennis Leigh, who was at the time a student at the Royal College of Art. Together with Chris Cross, Stevie Shears, Warren Cann and Billy Currie, they released a single in 1975 called Ain’t Misbehavin’. Over the next few years the band went through a series of name changes, until the singer changed his name to John Foxx and the band became known as Ultravox! Ultravox live shows were so powerful that they signed a contract with Island Records in 1976, and released a debut album the following year.
Their early days were spent as part of the glam rock movement, selling many Ultravox tickets, but by 1979 the group had began to experience internal turmoil and difficulties between members. Things seemed ready to fall apart completely when a new member joined. This was Midge Ure, who came aboard in 1979, after a stint with Thin Lizzy. This new direction for the band proved to be a revitalizing moment, and in 1980 they released a new album on Chrysalis Records called Vienna. The company went on to produce their first top 40 hit, with the album going on to peak at number 14. The singles Sleepwalk, and Passing Strangers proved to be positive landmarks for the band, but the title track of the album ended up making it to number two in 1981, helping the band sell even more Ultravox tickets.
For the next six years the band lived the dream, then Ure left and they officially split up. An attempt was made to reform the band in 1992 by one of the former members, but it failed. However, in 2008 Midge Ure, Warren Cann, Chris Cross and Billie Currie reformed the band to tour across the United Kingdom. In 2009, their Return to Eden tour was a great success. It is still currently under way with dates throughout Sweden in August, so fans looking for the best Ultravox tour tickets should plan on heading north this summer.
