Villanelle are a UK rock trio formed in summer 2023 in Manchester, consisting of Gene Gallagher (vocals and guitar), Ben Taylor (guitar), and Jack Schiavo (bass). They emerged during a fresh wave of grunge revivalism, combining raw authenticity with visceral energy to bring a bold new voice to the modern rock scene.
Their debut single Hinge (2025) marks Villanelle’s entry into the music world with a thunderous statement. The track features heavy, distorted guitars, rumbling bass, and driving drums, alongside vocals that shift from urgent roar to drawled, anguished tones. The lyrics explore themes of sleepless nights, anxiety, and raw emotion. Their sound draws clear influence from bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Dinosaur Jr, Black Sabbath, and My Bloody Valentine, blended with elements of shoegaze, punk, and alternative rock.
Live, Villanelle have already made an impression. Despite not having had any official releases in their first year, they closed out 2024 with a sold-out UK headline tour driven by word of mouth and support slots, including supporting Liam Gallagher on the Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary tour. Their shows are known for high energy, dynamic guitar solos, gritty intensity, and a fan base that spans younger listeners and longtime rock lovers alike. In December 2025, Villanelle will tour the UK, performing in cities like Manchester, London, Glasgow, Oxford, and Oxford, among others.
