Wendy James is an English singer-songwriter, best known as the frontwoman of the 1980s pop band Transvision Vamp. Born in London on January 21, 1966, she left home at 16 and moved to Brighton, where she met Nick Christian Sayer. Together, they formed Transvision Vamp, a band that gained fame with hits like “Baby I Don’t Care” and “I Want Your Love.” The band sold over five million copies of their three albums before disbanding in 1991.
Following the split, James launched a solo career with the album Now Ain’t the Time for Your Tears in 1993, produced by Elvis Costello. She later formed the band Racine in 2004, releasing two albums before they disbanded in 2008. In 2002, James relocated to New York City, where she continued to develop her music.
In 2024, James released her tenth solo album, The Shape of History, which reached number 16 on the UK Indie Album Chart. The album blends various musical influences, including punk, electronic, glam rock, and soul, showcasing her evolution as an artist.
