The original White Rabbits were formed in Columbia, Missouri in 2004. The original lineup consisted of five band members, but when the indie rock band moved north to New York City they added a sixth member, Jamie Levinson. Jamie had grown up in the same area in Columbia as Gregory Roberts, where the two of them had been members of a ska band known as The Hubcaps, while they were attending high school.
In addition to Jamie and Gregory, the other members of the band are Stephen Patterson, Alex Even, Brian Betancourt and Matt Clark, with Adam Russell a former member. Adam, along with Alex and Gregory, had previously been members of the band Texas Chainsaw Mass Choir.
The band’s debut album, Fort Nightly, was released in 2007 and was well received by music critics. In 2009, their second album, It’s Frightening, was released. Lead singer and guitarist of Spoon produced the album, and the album was released on TBD Records, who also hold bands Radiohead and Underworld. As well as releasing two albums, the band have released an EP and six singles.
The band have also appeared on NPR’s World Café, where they discussed their early days in Columbia, how they met and how they formed the group. They discussed their earlier works and how their music had developed, and how bands such as The Specials, Aztec Camera and The Style Council were a heavy influence on them.
The band tour consistently and are known for their onstage energy. They regularly cover songs, particularly Bob Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm, a track that was also covered by The Specials. They like to add their own distinctive sound to the original, ensuring that it is not just a reworking of the song, but a completely fresh piece of music.
The band performed at South By Southwest Festival, Texas in 2008, and were named by NME as one of the top three bands performing in that year. The guys have toured with bands such as Richard Swift, Spoon and The Walkmen. In 2007, they toured the US with the Kaiser Chiefs. Advertising their album, Fort Nightly, they crossed the pond, and White Rabbits tour tickets went on sale in the UK.
They appeared on the BBC show, Later With Jools Holland, where they performed Percussion Gun and We Done Wrong/They Done Wrong.
