Yo La Tengo, which means "I've got it" in Spanish (also abbreviated as YLT), emerged as an American indie rock band from Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1984. The trio, consisting of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew since 1992, was initially formed by Kaplan and Hubley. The band's name, inspired by a baseball anecdote, reflects their early experiences and eclectic style.
Their journey began with a 7" single in 1985, followed by their debut LP "Ride the Tiger" in 1986. Despite initial lineup changes and varying album sales, their releases garnered critical acclaim, notably with 1993's "Painful" and 1997's "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One."
Throughout their career, Yo La Tengo experimented with diverse genres, from folk to punk rock, and collaborated with artists like Yoko Ono and Jad Fair. They continued to evolve, exploring instrumental scores for films and releasing cover albums alongside their original work.
Their discography expanded with standout releases such as "Popular Songs" (2009) and "There's a Riot Going On" (2018), demonstrating their enduring creativity and musical prowess. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, they ventured into ambient compositions with "We Have Amnesia Sometimes."
On February 10, 2023, Yo La Tengo marked their seventeenth studio album release, titled "This Stupid World," reaffirming their place as influential figures in the indie rock scene.
