China Crisis is an English new wave and synth-pop band formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside. The core members are lead vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Lundon. Initially, they were a politically charged post-punk band influenced by Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes. Over time, they adopted a more commercial sound and enjoyed significant success in the 1980s.
The band achieved ten top 50 singles in the UK, including the top 10 hit "Wishful Thinking". Their albums "Working with Fire and Steel" and "Flaunt the Imperfection" were notable successes, with the latter reaching the top 10 and receiving gold certification. China Crisis is known for their sophisticated blend of pop, synthesizers, and introspective lyrics.
Daly and Lundon met at St Kevins School for Boys and started playing together in their teens, initially influenced by artists like Steely Dan, David Bowie, and Brian Eno. They started China Crisis around 1980 after acquiring a synthesizer and drum machine, moving from post-punk to synth-pop. The band signed with Virgin Records in 1982, and their debut album, "Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms", featured the hit single "Christian".
In recent years, China Crisis has focused on live performances, including extensive tours in the UK, North America, and other locations. They celebrated their 40th anniversary with a headlining tour in 2022. Both members remain active, with Lundon teaching songwriting and Daly releasing solo projects.
