James are an English rock band from Manchester, formed in 1982. Their music bridges indie pop, alternative rock and the Madchester sound, known for rich guitars, sweeping melodies, and emotionally resonant lyrics. From small gigs in Northern England to major international festivals, James have sold over 25 million albums worldwide and built a reputation as one of Britain’s most enduring bands.

They first made an impact with early independent releases like the Jimone EP in 1983, followed by cult favourites such as Stutter (1986) and Strip-mine (1988). Their breakthrough came with Gold Mother (1990), featuring songs like Sit Down, Come Home and How Was It for You?. Albums Laid (1993) and Seven (1992) solidified their reputation, while Whiplash (1997) and Millionaires (1999) continued to showcase their songwriting depth and sonic evolution.

After a hiatus in the early 2000s, the band reformed in 2007 and released Hey Ma (2008), followed by The Night Before and The Morning After (2010). Their later albums La Petite Mort (2014), Girl at the End of the World (2016) and Living in Extraordinary Times (2018) each showed renewed creative fire. In 2021 they released All the Colours of You, and in April 2024 they achieved their first UK No.1 studio album with Yummy. The album deals with themes including politics, AI, and cultural anxieties, further demonstrating how James continue to reflect the times while maintaining their melodic trademark.

Live performance remains central to James. Their shows are known for emotional intensity, wide setlists mixing hits old and new, and strong audience connection. In 2023 they celebrated 40 years together with an orchestral reworkings project called Be Opened By The Wonderful, and extensive UK and European tours with multiple sold-out shows. Their 2024 arena tour (with Razorlight as special guests) continues that momentum, as they play to audiences in larger venues across the UK.

In 2025 James continue to write, record, and tour with renewed energy. Fans can expect classic anthems such as Sit Down, Laid, Sometimes, alongside deeper cuts and new material that reflect their evolving sound.
