L.Y.R. are a British music and spoken word project featuring poet Simon Armitage alongside musicians Richard Walters and Patrick J Pearson. Combining poetry, electronic textures and atmospheric instrumentation, the group creates an unusual meeting point between literature and contemporary music. Armitage, who became Poet Laureate in 2019, brings his distinctive writing and spoken delivery to compositions shaped by Walters and Pearson, resulting in music that is intimate, cinematic and unmistakably British.
The group's work transforms observations about ordinary lives, landscapes, relationships and memory into richly textured pieces where words and music carry equal importance. Their debut album Call in the Crash Team introduced their distinctive approach, combining Armitage's precise language with subtle electronics, piano, guitar and layered production. Rather than fitting neatly into conventional rock or electronic categories, L.Y.R. occupy their own creative territory between poetry performance, songwriting and experimental pop.
In concert, L.Y.R. bring these carefully constructed pieces into an intimate live environment where audiences can concentrate on both the language and the surrounding sound. Spoken passages gain additional weight through atmospheric arrangements, while the music gives Armitage's imagery an expansive emotional backdrop. For audiences interested in poetry, alternative music and distinctive live performance, an L.Y.R. show offers something genuinely different from a traditional concert.
