Teddy Thompson was born in 1976 to Richard and Linda Thompson, well-known folk singers who were part of the English folk rock scene from the 60s. His sister, Kamila Thompson, is also a singer-songwriter whose debut album, Bad Marriage, was released in 2010. He performed with his father as part of the band in Richard’s performance on Jools Holland in 1993.
Teddy’s self-titled debut album was released in 2000. It was applauded by critics but remained an underground success . His second full-length album, Separate Ways, followed in 2005. In between the first and the second album he’d toured with Rosanne Cash and released an EP, Blunderpuss. Separate Ways featured Rufus and Martha Wainwright, who are both close friends of Teddy’s. He has toured with the siblings and also enlisted vocals to their albums. Teddy and Rufus featured on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack with the song King of the Road in 2005. Teddy also contributed a solo track, I Don’t Want to Say Goodbye. Teddy Thompson tickets started gaining popularity as his music became more widespread.
Teddy’s third album, Upfront & Down Low, was released in the US in July 2007. It’s an album of country music covers, plus one of Teddy’s own compositions, Down Low. He covers songs such as She Thinks I Still Care by George Jones, Walking the Floor Over You by Ernest Tubb, My Friends are Gonna Be Strangers by Merle Haggard, My Blue Tears by Dolly Parton and I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone.
His fourth studio album, A Piece of What You Need, was released in June 2008. This is an album of original compositions by Teddy. “Thompson has emerged from his parents shadows to deliver one of this year's best.” –The Guardian. The first single, In My Arms, was accompanied by a video which featured Rufus Wainwright dressed as Elvis Presley. The album went to number 10 in the UK album chart and received very positive reviews from the press. Teddy has described it as “close to the record I've always wanted to make.”
Teddy’s songs are deeply personal and contain a lot of anguish without becoming self-indulgent. He is known for using black humour in his songs. In addition to playing guitar and singing, Teddy also occasionally incorporates the ukulele into his music and live shows.
