The Charlatans are one of Britain’s most enduring and beloved alternative rock bands, known for their ability to evolve across decades while staying true to their unmistakable sound. Blending elements of indie rock, psychedelia, and dance-infused groove, the band have remained a cornerstone of British music since the early 1990s, continually redefining what it means to be timeless.

Formed in the West Midlands in 1988, The Charlatans — led by charismatic frontman Tim Burgess alongside Mark Collins, Martin Blunt, Tony Rogers and Pete Salisbury — emerged at the height of the Madchester scene. Their debut album Some Friendly (1990) exploded onto the UK charts, featuring the era-defining single The Only One I Know, which remains a festival anthem and a symbol of the early 90s indie explosion.

The band’s early success was followed by a run of acclaimed albums that showcased their versatility and resilience. Between 10th and 11th (1992) and Up to Our Hips (1994) saw them move toward a more introspective, groove-based sound, while Tellin’ Stories (1997) delivered some of their biggest hits, including One to Another, North Country Boy, and How High. The album became a defining moment, solidifying their reputation as one of the UK’s most consistent and innovative bands.

Over the following decades, The Charlatans continued to thrive, evolving with the times while maintaining their distinctive identity. Albums such as Wonderland (2001), You Cross My Path (2008), and Modern Nature (2015) demonstrated the band’s refusal to stand still, blending soulful grooves, electronic textures, and thoughtful lyricism. Their 2023 release Different Days featured collaborations with Johnny Marr, Paul Weller and Sharon Horgan, underscoring their continued relevance and collaborative spirit.

Their current album We Are Love is due for release on 31 October 2025 via BMG — the band’s 14th studio album and first in eight years. This new record is being hailed as a forward-looking chapter that balances their storied past with bold fresh sounds. The title track has already been released as the lead single and sets the tone for the album’s mix of stylish production and emotional depth.
