They Are Gutting a Body of Water are an American alternative rock project led by songwriter and musician Douglas Dulgarian. Emerging from Philadelphia's independent music community, the project has become known for combining shoegaze, noise rock, indie rock and experimental production into music that can shift from hazy and melodic to abrasive and unpredictable. Their distinctive approach has made them an important name within the contemporary revival of guitar driven shoegaze and underground alternative music.
Often abbreviated as TAGABOW, They Are Gutting a Body of Water have developed their sound through releases including "Destiny XL" and "Lucky Styles", using dense guitars, unusual production choices and understated vocals to create a deliberately unconventional atmosphere. Their music draws from the history of shoegaze while refusing to simply recreate it, incorporating modern recording ideas and unexpected structures that give the project a character of its own.
Live, They Are Gutting a Body of Water bring the density of their recordings into a louder and more physical environment. Layers of distorted guitar, shifting dynamics and immersive noise can transform intimate venues into expansive sonic spaces, while quieter passages make the heavier moments even more effective. For fans of shoegaze, experimental rock and contemporary independent music, their concerts offer the chance to experience one of the scene's most adventurous guitar projects at full volume.
