While Al was studying architecture, he became a DJ at the university’s radio station. It is here that he started using the moniker “Weird Al” professionally, after his fellow students gave him the nickname. His first release was a parody of The Knack’s My Sharona; Al’s version was called My Bologna. The Knack liked the song and suggested it be released as a single, and Al secured a six-month recording contract.
In September 1980, he recorded a song called Another One Rides the Bus, which was a Queen parody, and a performance of the song on The Tomorrow Show was his first TV appearance.
In 1981 Weird Al went on tour with Dr Demento, and his show caught the attention of manager Jay Levey, who helped Al get a band together. This led to the single Eat It, a parody of Beat It by Michael Jackson, going to number 12 in the US chart and becoming an MTV favourite, partly down to the video which was a frame-for-frame parody of the original Michael Jackson video. The song won him a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording and encouraged plenty of people to show an interest in Weird Al Yankovic tickets and tours.
His single White & Nerdy has been his biggest success to date, reaching number nine in the US chart. It comes from his 12th studio album, Straight Outta Lynwood, and parodies the song Ridin’ by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone. His albums are consistently nominated for Grammy Awards within the comedy categories, and this album was no exception. His 2003 effort, Poodle Hat, won the award for Best Comedy Album.
Weird Al Yankovic tickets are always a hot seller, as the gigs provide a lively and upbeat atmosphere with hundreds of recognisable songs. Songs uploaded to file sharing networks are often misattributed to Al if their subject matter is in any way similar (parodies and such), so his official website has had to include a list of legitimate Weird Al Yankovic releases to set the record straight. He worries his reputation has been damaged by the often vulgar and offensive pieces, saying that that’s his “only real beef” with file sharing networks.
