David Essex OBE, born David Albert Cook on July 23, 1947, is an English singer, songwriter, and actor with a prolific career spanning music and film. Born in Plaistow, Essex, to an East End docker father and a self-taught pianist Irish Traveller mother, Essex grew up in Canning Town and later Marks Gate near Chadwell Heath and Romford.
Essex's early interest in football and music led him to choose Shipman County Secondary School, where he played drums with a local band, China Plates. He started his music career in 1965 with the record "And the Tears Came Tumbling Down." Essex gained recognition with the lead role in the stage musical "Godspell" in 1971 and starred in the film "That'll Be the Day" (1973), featuring his international hit single "Rock On."
Throughout the 1970s, Essex became a prominent figure in the music industry, achieving chart success with hits like "Gonna Make You a Star" (1974) and "Hold Me Close" (1975). His pop idol looks garnered a strong female fan base, and he was voted the number one British male vocalist in 1974.
In addition to his music career, Essex embraced various roles in musicals and films. Notably, he appeared in "Tommy" (1973) and played the character Che in the original production of "Evita" (1978). He also starred in the motorcycle racing film "Silver Dream Racer" (1980) and the West End musical "Mutiny!" (1985).
Essex continued to diversify his career with roles in TV, including the sitcom "The River" (1988) and a guest appearance on ITV1's "Heartbeat" in 2000. He actively supported the rights of Romany and Irish Travellers, being the Patron of Britain's National Gypsy Council.
In 1999, Essex was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his charitable services, especially to Voluntary Service Overseas. Despite his success in the UK, he remained relatively unknown in the United States.
In recent years, Essex continued to tour the UK, release albums, and act. He married Welsh actress Susan Hallam-Wright in 2010, and in 2011, he joined the cast of "EastEnders" as Eddie Moon. In 2013, he wrote the music score for the film "Traveller," in which he co-starred with his son Billy Cook. Essex's contributions to music, acting, and charitable endeavors have solidified his enduring presence in the entertainment industry.
