Adrianne Elizabeth Lenker, born on July 9, 1991, is an American musician renowned as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter of the band Big Thief.
Raised in a Christian cult until the age of four, Lenker spent her formative years primarily in Minnesota, with some time traveling throughout the Midwest, living in a Ford cargo van. She demonstrated early musical talent, writing her first song at eight and recording her first album at 13. Alongside her musical pursuits, Lenker was a three-time state karate champion, engaging in martial arts as one of her interests. She obtained her GED at 16 and received a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music.
Lenker's solo career began at a young age, with her debut album "Stages of the Sun" released in 2006 when she was 14. Subsequent solo releases include "Hours Were the Birds" (2014) and "Abysskiss" (2018). In 2015, she, along with Buck Meek and others, formed the band Big Thief, gaining critical acclaim for their work.
Her personal life includes meeting Buck Meek, a future Big Thief co-founder, in Boston, and later reencountering him in New York. They married when Lenker was 24 but divorced in 2018, choosing to remain in Big Thief as "deep friends." In 2019, Lenker was in a relationship with artist Indigo Sparke, which ended in 2020. Lenker identifies as "queer" but prefers not to define her sexual orientation explicitly, often exploring themes of gender and the gender binary in her lyrics.
