Aswad, a British reggae group known for infusing strong R&B and soul influences into their sound, has been a prominent fixture in the music scene since the mid-1970s. Their name, "Aswad," is Arabic for "black."
Founded in 1975 in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London, Aswad consists of members who are descendants of Caribbean immigrants to the UK. The original lineup included guitarist/vocalist Brinsley "Chaka B" Forde, drummer/vocalist Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, lead guitarist/vocalist Donald "Dee" Griffiths, bassist George "Ras" Oban, and keyboardist Courtney "Khaki" Hemmings.
nitially rooted in roots reggae and dub music, Aswad's early works tackled issues faced by black youth in the UK. Their albums like "Hulet" (1978) and "New Chapter" (1981) marked their transition towards a more commercial reggae style. Their live album "Live and Direct" (1983), recorded at the Notting Hill Carnival, became a notable record of their dynamic live performances.
Throughout their career, Aswad toured globally, from prestigious venues like London's Royal Albert Hall to international stages in West Africa, Israel, and Japan. The band underwent lineup changes over the years, with Gaye and Robinson remaining as the core duo until Angus Gaye's passing in 2022. Their final studio album, "City Lock," was released in 2009, featuring singles like "What Is Love?" and "Do That Thing."
Aswad's influence on reggae music, blending traditional Jamaican roots with contemporary R&B elements, has solidified their place as pioneers in the genre and cultural icons in the UK and beyond.
