Babybird is an English rock band formed by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Jones, who has been releasing music since 1995. Jones initially released solo work under the name "Baby Bird" but adopted "Babybird" to distinguish the full band lineup. Over the years, Jones has recorded many of the Babybird albums himself and has also released music as a solo artist and under various aliases such as Death of the Neighbourhood, Trucker, Black Reindeer, Deluder, and Arthritis Kid.
Jones began by writing and recording songs at home, releasing his first collection of demos, I Was Born a Man, in July 1995. He formed a band to tour and promote this work. In 1996, Babybird signed with Echo Records, releasing their first single that July. Despite early success, the band was dropped by their label in 2000 after their third album, Bugged, had poor sales, leading to a temporary split.
Jones continued to write fiction, release solo work, and create film scores, including for Blessed (2004). The band reformed in 2005 and released Between My Ears There Is Nothing But Music in 2006. They toured in 2009, promoting the album Ex-Maniac (2010), which featured a cameo by long-term fan Johnny Depp. However, they split again in 2013.
In 2015, Jones revived the Babybird name, releasing new music and reforming the band as a live unit in 2017. They toured in early 2019 and released a compilation album, Happy Stupid Nothing, in March 2019, followed by Photosynthesis in July 2019. Jones continues to release new Babybird albums via Bandcamp, often as unique limited edition CDs.
