The band formed in Harrow, Middlesex in 1979. Neil Arthur (vocals) and Stephen Luscombe (instrumentalist) released their first EP, Irene and Mavis, in 1980, but won a recording contract when they were featured on the Some Bizarre Album, which also contained songs by their contemporaries, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode. London Records (a label which has also been host to the Rolling Stones, Genesis, the Kinks, ZZ Top, Salt N Pepa, the Moody Blues and more) had their attention drawn to the duo, and signed them in 1982.
Their first single on London Records was the double A-Side, God’s Kitchen/I’ve Seen the World, followed by Feel Me (this would later be remixed by Faithless for their 2010 album, The Dance). Their first taste of real chart success, though, was with Living on the Ceiling, a single which reached number seven on the UK chart. Their debut album, Happy Families, entered the top 30. Around this time, Blancmange tickets were selling to a cult following.
Their second album Mange Tout performed better commercially, reaching a respectable number eight. It spawned the hits Waves, Blind Vision, That’s Love That it is and Don’t Tell Me. Their later singles and albums did not perform so well, and Blancmange formally split in 1987.
With the recent renaissance of the 80s electro/synth sound, interest has been reignited in Blancmange tickets and tours, and the duo have confirmed they are writing and recording new material. Their first three albums, Happy Families, Mange Tout and Believe You Me were reissued in 2008 in remastered editions.
