Fyfe Dangerfield formed the indie band Guillemots back in 2004. He is recognised for his distinctive singing voice. The first album release by Guillemots, Through the Windowpane, was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2006 but missed out to the debut album by Arctic Monkeys. One of the best known tracks from this album is Trains to Brazil, although the opening track, Little Bear, was picked out by legend Sir Paul McCartney as one of his favourite songs.
Dangerfield has been honing his songwriting talents since he was a young boy in Birmingham. He was previously a member of the band Senseless Prayer. When they disbanded he was recording under the name Fyfe Dangerfield and the Accident. He received some recognition in his hometown of Birmingham, even featuring on a promotional CD that was given away with a local newspaper.
Guillemots were named after the plural for a group of seabirds. The band has a unique music style that is easily identifiable. Despite being a four-piece band they are often joined by woodwind and saxophone players. Their performances also regularly feature unusual and quirky instruments. The band's second album, Red, was released in 2008. This album signalled a progression for the band while staying true to their individual style. The single, Get Over It, preceded the album's release and provided the band with their first top 20 hit.
While the band have confirmed work on their third album, Fyfe has written, recorded and released his first solo record. The album, Fly Yellow Moon, was promoted by a string of live dates in the UK and the USA (Fyfe Dangerfield tickets are available from Eventim when they are on sale).
Fyfe released three singles from the album that didn't chart in the UK. However, his cover of Billy Joel's, She's Always A Woman, was used in an advertising campaign for John Lewis. The song sparked a frenzy as demand prompted the commercial release of the single. Dangerfield appeared on many TV shows to promote the single that eventually charted at number seven in the UK charts.
His composing talents are regularly in demand amongst his contemporaries, with commissions ranging from choral arrangements for adult choral groups such as Ex Cathedra Chamber Choir and children's choirs, for whom he wrote, A Stray Dog for Congratulations.
