G4 is a British vocal group that gained widespread recognition after appearing on the first series of the television show The X Factor in 2004. Known for their unique blend of classical and pop music, often referred to as "popera," the group quickly captured public attention with their powerful harmonies and operatic style. Originally formed by four students from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, G4 was initially conceived as a busking group to earn extra money during their studies.

The original lineup included Jonathan Ansell (tenor), Mike Christie (baritone), Ben Thapa (tenor), and Matthew Stiff (bass). Their name, G4, comes from "Guildhall 4," a reference to the institution where they met. The group auditioned for The X Factor with little expectation, but their classically-trained vocals and arrangements quickly made them stand out. Although they finished as runners-up to Steve Brookstein, G4's popularity surged following the show.

After the competition, G4 signed a record deal and released their debut album, which quickly reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album featured classical arrangements of popular songs, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Nessun Dorma, and My Way. Their crossover appeal helped bring classical music to a broader audience, and their success continued with several more albums, including G4 and Friends and Act Three. Their music often featured guest artists and orchestral accompaniment, blending genres in a way that appealed to fans of both classical and pop music.

In 2007, G4 announced they were disbanding, citing the pressures of fame and differing career goals. Each member went on to pursue individual paths, with Jonathan Ansell embarking on a solo career and performing in musical theatre, and other members exploring various musical and personal interests. For several years, it appeared that G4's story had come to an end.

However, in 2014, the group reunited to celebrate their tenth anniversary. The reunion was well received, and G4 began touring again, releasing new albums and performing live across the UK. Matthew Stiff did not return for the reunion, and his place was later filled by bass-baritone Nick Ashby, followed by Duncan Sandilands. Despite the lineup changes, G4 remained committed to their original mission: bringing classical vocal music to modern audiences in an accessible and entertaining way.

G4’s live performances are known for their dramatic flair, emotional power, and ability to connect with audiences of all ages. Their concerts often include a mix of opera, musical theatre, and contemporary hits, all performed with classical vocal technique.
