Gyles Daubeney Brandreth (born 8 March 1948) is a British broadcaster, writer, and former politician known for his diverse career spanning television, radio, writing, and politics.
Brandreth was born in Wuppertal, West Germany, where his father was serving as a legal officer. He moved to London at the age of three and was educated at the Lycée Français in South Kensington and Bedales School in Hampshire. He studied Modern History and Modern Languages at New College, Oxford, where he was active in the Oxford Union and the Oxford University Dramatic Society.
Brandreth was a presenter for TV-am's Good Morning Britain in the 1980s and has been a regular guest on Channel 4's Countdown and BBC's The One Show. He has hosted various game shows, including Public Opinion and Knowitalls, and appeared on several popular UK panel shows such as QI and Have I Got News for You. He also featured in the Netflix series Great Canal Journeys and the podcast Celebrity Gogglebox.
Brandreth frequently appears on BBC Radio 4's Just a Minute and has presented and contributed to several other radio programmes, including Whispers, Living with the Enemy, and Wordaholics. In 1992, Brandreth was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for the City of Chester, serving until his defeat in 1997. He then resumed his media career, continuing to make public appearances and contribute to various media outlets.
