In Flames is a Swedish heavy metal band that was formed in Gothenburg in 1990 by guitarist Jesper Strömblad. Originally conceived as a side project from Strömblad's death metal band Ceremonial Oath, In Flames aimed to explore a more melodic musical direction. The band's early years saw varying musicians recording with them, including session musicians. In 1993, Strömblad recruited guitarist Glenn Ljungström and bassist Johan Larsson to form the first official lineup.
Their debut album, "Lunar Strain," was released in 1994, featuring session vocals by Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity. The band gained attention with their EP "Subterranean" in 1994, leading to a record deal with Nuclear Blast. In Flames underwent lineup changes and, by 1995, solidified the lineup with Björn Gelotte as the drummer and Anders Fridén as the vocalist.
The breakthrough came with their second studio album, "The Jester Race" (1996), which marked a significant milestone in Swedish death metal and melodic death metal. Subsequent albums like "Whoracle" (1997) and "Colony" (1999) further established In Flames in the metal scene.
In 2002, the band underwent a stylistic shift with the release of "Reroute to Remain," moving towards alternative metal. This change was met with criticism from some fans but expanded their mainstream audience. The albums "Soundtrack to Your Escape" (2004) and "Come Clarity" (2006) continued to showcase the band's evolution, incorporating clean vocals and catchier choruses.
In Flames' musical style evolved over the years, featuring harmonized lead guitar melodies, growled and screamed vocals, and later, clean vocals. The band explored various lyrical themes, from global subjects to personal issues. Despite stylistic changes, In Flames maintained their influence on metal, particularly in the melodic death metal and metalcore genres.
The band continued to release albums, including "Siren Charms" (2014) and "Battles" (2016). In 2018, they released "I, the Mask." In 2022, In Flames announced their fourteenth studio album, "Foregone," which was released in 2023.
Throughout their career, In Flames received awards, including Grammis Awards, and influenced numerous bands in metalcore and melodic death metal. The band's iconic Jester Head mascot has been a consistent symbol since their second album, "The Jester Race." The lineup has seen changes over the years, with notable departures, including founder Jesper Strömblad, and additions like Niclas Engelin and Bryce Paul. The band's legacy extends beyond their music, with a lasting impact on the metal genre.
