Max Alfred Elliott, better known by his stage name Maxi Priest, was born on June 10, 1961, in Lewisham, London. A British reggae vocalist of Jamaican descent, Maxi Priest is celebrated for his unique reggae fusion style, which blends reggae with R&B influences. He is recognized as one of the pioneers and most successful artists in this genre.

In his teenage years, Maxi worked with sound systems Jah Shaka and Negus Negast and was a founding member of Saxon Studio International. This experience honed his performance skills at local youth clubs and house parties.

Maxi Priest's career took off with performances on the Saxon Studio International soundsystem and independent single releases. His early hits, including "Sensi" and "Mi God-Mi King," established his reputation in the dancehall and roots reggae scenes. His 1988 album Maxi, featuring the hit cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," propelled him to international fame.

Maxi achieved significant success in the United States, becoming one of only two British reggae acts (along with UB40) to top the Billboard charts with his 1990 hit "Close to You." His duet with Roberta Flack, "Set the Night to Music," reached the Top Ten in 1991, and his collaboration with Shaggy, "That Girl," was a hit in 1996.

Throughout his career, Maxi Priest has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Sly and Robbie, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, and Roberta Flack. He has continuously adapted his style and worked with both established and emerging musicians.

In 2012, Maxi recorded a cover of L'Arc-en-Ciel's "Vivid Colors" for their tribute album, and in 2013, he collaborated with Rishi Rich on a remix of the Hindi song "Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse." His 2014 album Easy to Love reached number two on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart, reaffirming his enduring appeal in the reggae music scene.

Maxi Priest remains a prominent figure in reggae fusion, known for his smooth vocals and ability to blend genres seamlessly.
