Natalie Merchant is an American singer-songwriter who joined the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and then left in 1993 to pursue her dream solo career. Natalie was born in New York, United States of America in 1963. She has Italian roots and her family had always encouraged her to enjoy music and took her to many musical events ranging from the Symphony to Styk. Her mother was inspired by musical greats such as the Beatles and Aretha Franklin. As she grew up she was not allowed to watch television and when she was old enough she joined the band 10,000 Maniacs.

10,000 Maniacs were previously called Still Life. Merchant was the main lyricist when she joined in 1981, while the band was setting up at the local community college. In 1993 however she decided that life in the band had been good for her while producing albums like Human Conflict Number Five but she was now ready to start her own solo career and do Natalie Merchant concerts in her own right.

Merchant has always tried to write her own lyrics and songs and she tried this for her debut solo album Tiger Lily. The debut album was released in 1995 under the Elektra recording label - it became a commercial success and she was ready to tour with it.

Her next album release was Ophelia; it contained a large amount of work from the composer Gavin Bryars. In 2000 the folk singer embarked on a Folk Tour supported by the country band Wilco. She then went on to release Motherland, it was her most experimental studio album to date, yet it paid off as she achieved gold on the Billboard charts. To promote the album there was an 18 month Natalie Merchant tour, starting in America and then extending into Europe. Natalie Merchant tickets sold quickly on her massive worldwide international tour.

Her latest album Leave Your Sleep was released on April 13th 2010; the album hit online success with number one positions on Amazon and on the Billboard Folk Album chart. With her new album out, another Natalie Merchant tour may be on the cards.
