Nicholas Drain Lowe (born 24 March 1949) is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and producer, renowned for his contributions to pub rock, power pop, and new wave. As a versatile artist, Lowe plays guitar, bass guitar, piano, and harmonica. His solo career boasts several well-reviewed albums, and he is celebrated for hits like "Cruel to Be Kind" and "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass". Additionally, Lowe's production work with artists such as Elvis Costello and Graham Parker has been highly influential. He penned notable songs like "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" and "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock 'n' Roll)".
Lowe attended Woodbridge School in Suffolk and began his music career in 1967 with the band Kippington Lodge, later renamed Brinsley Schwarz. He gained notoriety as a songwriter and performer on the London pub rock circuit. After Brinsley Schwarz disbanded in 1975, Lowe joined Rockpile with Dave Edmunds and became an in-house producer at Stiff Records. His production credits include albums for The Damned and Dr. Feelgood.
Despite challenges with Rockpile's recording contracts, Lowe's solo efforts, such as the album Labour of Lust, achieved commercial success. His marriage to country singer Carlene Carter linked him to the Carter/Cash family, and he maintained close ties with them even after their divorce in 1990.
In his later career, Lowe transitioned from pop and rock to a more mature sound, incorporating elements of country, soul, and R&B. His recent albums reflect this evolution, earning critical acclaim. He continues to perform and record, touring with bands like Los Straitjackets and releasing compilations and reissues of his earlier work.
