Ride, an English rock band formed in Oxford in 1988, is widely recognized as a key pioneer of the shoegaze genre that gained prominence in the early 1990s in the UK. The original lineup included vocalists and guitarists Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence "Loz" Colbert, and bassist Steve Queralt. The band's debut album, "Nowhere" (1990), and its follow-up, "Going Blank Again" (1992), are regarded as two of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time. The lead single from the latter, "Leave Them All Behind," became their most commercially successful song, reaching No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart.
Ride disbanded in 1996, just before the release of their fourth album, "Tarantula," which received negative reviews. Andy Bell later joined Oasis as their bassist. In 2014, the band reunited for touring and released two albums, "Weather Diaries" (2017) and "This Is Not a Safe Place" (2019). Their reunion showcased a return to critical and fan acclaim.
The band's history includes their early years in Oxford, where they formed and played their first gig at a college Christmas party in 1988. Ride gained attention from former Jesus and Mary Chain manager Alan McGee after Jim Reid heard their demo. The band released three EPs in 1990, and their debut album "Nowhere" achieved critical and commercial success, reaching No. 11 in the UK.
The subsequent years saw Ride's evolution and challenges. Their second album, "Going Blank Again," produced the hit single "Leave Them All Behind" and reached the UK top 10. However, the following album, "Carnival of Light" (1994), marked a change in musical direction and received mixed reviews. Internal tensions and a perceived decline in creativity led to the band's breakup in 1995.
Post-breakup, members pursued individual projects, with Andy Bell joining Hurricane No. 1 and later becoming Oasis's bassist. Channel Four documented a 2001 reunion recording for a Sonic Youth documentary. Ride released compilations and solo projects during the 2000s.
In 2014, Ride reunited for tours and decided to record new material. The singles "Charm Assault" and "Home Is a Feeling" preceded the release of their sixth studio album, "Weather Diaries" (2017). The album received critical acclaim, and the band continued touring.
Ride's seventh album, "This Is Not a Safe Place," was released in August 2019. The band's 2022 activities included performing at the Primavera Sound festival and a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their albums "Nowhere" and "Going Blank Again." In November 2022, they announced work on their seventh album, and on January 11, 2024, Ride revealed details about their new album, "Interplay," set for release on March 29, 2024, featuring the lead single "Peace Sign."
