Walter Schreifels, who was the frontman of the group Quicksand, formed Rival Schools as a hardcore ‘supergroup’, with its members previously having been in Gorilla Biscuits (Walter), CIV (Sam Siegler) and Iceburn (Cache Tolman). The lineup also included Ian Love.
The band’s first album was United By Fate, released in 2001. It was produced by the Grammy-nominated Luke Ebbin and put out on Island Records. The first single, Used for Glue, came out soon after, which was followed by Good Things – both singles enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV in the US and the UK, but failed to set the charts alight down to their alternative appeal. Rival Schools tickets for their tours during this time were very popular to the alternative crowd, and their gigs were renowned for their energy.
When Ian Love left in 2002, it signalled the end for Rival Schools. A second album had been scheduled for summer 2003, but it was never officially released (some original recordings were leaked). The rest of the band called it a day in 2003 and went on to pursue other projects – Walter formed Walking Concert; Ian recorded a self titled solo album in 2006; Cache joined Institute; and Sam joined Nightmare of You and also provided percussion for the nu-metallers Limp Bizkit.
In April 2008 German Rock am Ring festival announced that Rival Schools would be performing at the festival in June, signalling the return of the band. This excited many fans and Rival Schools tickets were suddenly a hot topic again. They played at Download Festival in Donington Park that year as well.
A five-date Rival Schools tour followed and the band revealed they were writing new material. Since this announcement they’ve made several festival appearances including Reading and Leeds, and have shared stages with Mad Caddies, The Bronx and Rise Against. They also secured a support slot for The Offspring in 2009.
