Sabrage has a rich history, dating back to the Napoleonic era in early 19th-century France. Napoleon Bonaparte himself famously said, “Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it.”
Legend has it that after the French Revolution, the Hussars, Napoleon’s cavalry officers, often celebrated their military conquests with champagne - a drink that symbolized both luxury and triumph.
Opening a bottle the traditional way was impractical on horseback, so the Hussars would use their sabers to slice off the top of the bottle in one swift motion. This dramatic gesture, showcasing skill and flair, came to represent their fearless spirit and zest for life, which makes it the perfect title for this production.
Sabrage is a show created by production company Strut & Fret, who have been touring their unique, world-renowned brand of opulent, cheeky, edge-of-your-seat theatre in 32 countries in the past 25 years. They have joined forces with the Olivier and Tony Award-winning Menier Chocolate Factory to create a show filled with international circus and theatrical elites.
