Shellac is an influential American noise rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1992. The band consists of guitarist Steve Albini, drummer Todd Trainer, and bassist Bob Weston. Known for their minimalist sound and analog recording techniques, Shellac has left a significant mark on the noise rock genre.
Shellac began as an informal collaboration between guitarist Steve Albini, formerly of Big Black and Rapeman, and drummer Todd Trainer from Breaking Circus and Brick Layer Cake. The original lineup included former Naked Raygun bassist Camilo Gonzalez, who was later replaced by Bob Weston of Volcano Suns. Both Albini and Weston are also well-respected recording engineers, known for their meticulous approach to analog recording and microphone placement.
Shellac's music is characterized by asymmetric time signatures, repetitive rhythms, and an angular guitar sound. Their lyrics, written by Albini and Weston, are often surreal and sarcastic. The band's sound is heavily influenced by their use of vintage Travis Bean guitars and the Interfax "Harmonic Percolator" distortion pedal. Shellac is known for their sparse arrangements and "amelodic" style, often eschewing traditional song structures.
The band is known for their intimate live performances in smaller venues and their interactive "question and answer" sessions during shows. Although they initially avoided playing festivals, they were convinced by the band Mogwai to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) festival. Shellac later curated ATP in 2002 and 2012, where they played first each morning to encourage attendees to see other acts.
Shellac's recordings are released through Touch and Go Records. Their debut album, At Action Park, came out in 1994, followed by Terraform (1998), 1000 Hurts (2000), Excellent Italian Greyhound (2007), and Dude Incredible (2014). In 2019, they released The End of Radio, a collection of Peel Sessions from 1994 and 2004. Their latest album, To All Trains, was announced for release on May 17, 2024, but tragically, Steve Albini passed away on May 7, 2024, just before its release.
Shellac is considered one of the most influential noise rock bands, with their impact felt across numerous bands and genres. They have been praised for their distinctive sound and contributions to music production. Shellac has been honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue and recognized as the "House Band" of Primavera Sound festival. Albini's passing was a significant loss to the music community, with tributes highlighting Shellac's profound influence and enduring legacy.
Shellac's influence extends across the music industry, inspiring bands like Future of the Left, Converge, and Mono, among others. Their commitment to analog recording and minimalist aesthetics continues to resonate with musicians and fans alike.
