In a Los Angeles recording studio during the summer of 1976, an ambitious rock band is racing against time to record their make-or-break album. As the pressure mounts and personal tensions rise, the band members must confront their own demons while trying to create something extraordinary. Through marathon recording sessions, creative conflicts, and emotional revelations, Stereophonic captures the electric atmosphere of a pivotal moment in music history.
David Adjmi (playwright) and Will Butler (songwriter) began working on the play in 2014, with the project being workshopped in 2018. Adjmi wanted to create a piece of theatre that felt like the audience was watching a documentary unfolding on stage, without it becoming a musical. The set design included real music recording equipment, which allowed any instrument onstage to be recorded live every single night.
Stereophonic first previewed Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in Oct 23, receiving critical acclaim and was named Best Play of 2023 by numerous publications. Following its Off-Broadway success, the play opened on Broadway at John Golden Theatre in April 2024, winning 5 Tony Awards, including Best Play and setting the current record for most Tony nominations for a play in history.
