The Steve Miller Band have been around in different versions since 1965. Clearly a band with staying power, their unique sound encompasses rock, blues, soul, art rock, and even a little bit of country. For the first couple of years, the band was trying to “find itself”, but by 1967, the core group of Steve Miller, James Cooke (guitar), Lonnie Turner (bass), and Tim Davis (drums), had become the Steve Miller Band. They performed at various venues around California with big names such as Boz Scaggs and Chuck Berry, and eventually recorded their debut album in the UK. While the album itself wasn’t a chart topper, several tracks from it became very well known.
1969 saw the release of the Brave New World and Your Saving Grace albums, followed in 1970 by Number 5. Crowds were soon lining up to buy Steve Miller Band tickets and hear the funky/rock/blues mix that appealed to so many. In 1971 Steve Miller broke his neck in a car accident, so touring stopped for a while. The studio albums, Rock Love and Recall The Beginning. . . A Journey From Eden, were then released.
In 1973, after Steve’s recovery, the band released the album, The Joker, which was their first certified platinum album. The band’s sound had evolved and become more of a smooth blues/rock sound, a departure from their previous sharp-edged psychedelic rock sound. The commercial success of this album encouraged more songwriting, and in 1976 the band released the album, Fly Like An Eagle, which had three singles on it released, each of which reached the top 20.
1977’s album, Book of Dreams and 1982’s Abracadabra each had top 20 hits, keeping the Steve Miller Band right in the public eye. Because of their continued success, the band still sells out for live performances, with people lining up for hours to get Steve Miller Band tickets.
Their new album, Bingo! was released in 2010, and is dedicated to their long-time band member Norton Buffalo, who died from lung cancer.
