Born and raised in Conyers, Georgia, Swims discovered his love for soul music early in life, inspired by artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green, introduced to him by his father. Despite being a football enthusiast initially, a teacher's suggestion led him to explore theater during his high school years at Salem High School.

Teddy Swims started his music career in 2019, initially joining Atlanta-area bands like WildHeart, Eris, and various cover bands. His foray into solo work began when he started rapping over beats made by his friend Addy Maxwell, leading to a U.S. tour with Tyler Carter.
