Jaten Collin Dimsdale, better known by his stage name Teddy Swims, is an American singer-songwriter celebrated for his eclectic blend of R&B, soul, country, and pop. Born and raised in Conyers, Georgia, Swims discovered his love for soul music early in life, inspired by artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green, introduced to him by his father. Despite being a football enthusiast initially, a teacher's suggestion led him to explore theater during his high school years at Salem High School.
His journey into the world of performance arts began in high school, participating in s and plays. The experience ignited his passion for music, prompting him to learn instruments like the piano and ukulele and develop his vocal skills by watching YouTube videos of various singers.
Teddy Swims started his music career in 2019, initially joining Atlanta-area bands like WildHeart, Eris, and various cover bands. His foray into solo work began when he started rapping over beats made by his friend Addy Maxwell, leading to a U.S. tour with Tyler Carter. His stage name, Teddy Swims, reflects both a childhood nickname based on his size and an internet acronym, symbolizing the integration of different aspects of his personality.
In June 2019, he gained attention by posting cover performances on YouTube, spanning diverse genres and artists such as Michael Jackson, Lewis Capaldi, Shania Twain, and more. One of his notable covers, "You're Still the One" by Shania Twain, became a viral sensation with millions of views.
