The band started out as Fear of Flying when they were 15. They embarked on one tour as a support act, and also netted support slots for The Maccabees, Jamie T and Laura Marling. They released two singles as Fear of Flying: Routemaster/Round Three in August 2006, and Three’s a Crowd/Forget-Me-Nots in December 2006.
They disbanded in 2007 after feeling that they had grown out of the band – and started afresh as White Lies, which they felt gave them freedom to pursue their more mature and slightly darker sound. The first White Lies tickets were for their gig at Hoxton Square’s Bar & Kitchen in February 2008. A few days after this performance they signed to Fiction Records, after receiving numerous offers from various labels. Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe championed the song Death, naming it his “hottest record in the world”, before it was even released.
In March 2008 they were announced as one of the four bands taking part in the NME New Noise Tour (now the NME Radar Tour), and in May they appeared on Later...with Jools Holland – and this was all before their debut album had come out. In the summer of 2008 they made appearances at Oxygen, T in the Park, Reading and Leeds festivals, and followed this with their first White Lies headline tour of 13 dates in the UK. Death was released in September 2008, and more White Lies tickets became available for dates in America.
After these US dates, they returned to the UK and supported Glasvegas. It was announced that their debut album would be released in January 2009, with the title To Lose My Life... . The single of the same name was released a week before.
In November 2008, NME announced that White Lies would be taking part in the 2008 ShockWaves NME Awards Tour, alongside Florence + the Machine, Friendly Fires and Glasvegas. The tour visited 17 cities in the UK.
2009 saw White Lies being added to every “ones to watch” list you can imagine, including the BBC’s Sound of 2009 poll, and the BRITS Critics’ Choice. The album was released and went straight to number one.
White Lies tickets are always in demand, and now that their second album is due for release in January 2011, White Lies tickets are more popular than ever. The title is rumoured to be Ritual, with a first single called Bigger Than Us.
