William Fitzsimmons, born the youngest child to blind parents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a multi-instrumentalist known for his folk-infused music. Growing up in a home that housed a fully functional pipe organ hand-built by his father, Fitzsimmons developed proficiency in various instruments such as piano, trombone, guitar, banjo, melodica, ukulele, and mandolin.
His musical journey began after completing a master's degree in counseling and working as a mental health therapist. Fitzsimmons recorded a collection of songs during a summer break, leading to his debut album "Until When We Are Ghosts," released in 2005. His subsequent albums, including "Goodnight" (2006) and "The Sparrow and the Crow" (2008), often drew inspiration from personal and family experiences, with the latter exploring themes of divorce.
Fitzsimmons gained recognition through MySpace and touring with artists like Ingrid Michaelson, Brooke Fraser, and Cary Brothers. His music found placements in popular TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, further expanding his audience. Over the years, Fitzsimmons continued to release albums, including "Gold in the Shadows" (2011), "Lions" (2014), and "Mission Bell" (2018). He also embarked on European tours to promote releases like "Charleroi: Pittsburgh, Vol. 2" (2016), inspired by his family history.
In 2016, Fitzsimmons released his first live album, "William Fitzsimmons Live," featuring songs recorded at performances in Chicago, Amsterdam, and Paris. Notably, he covered Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" on this album. Subsequent releases include "Ready the Astronaut" and "No Promises: The Astronaut's Return" in 2021, followed by two cover albums, "Covers, Vol. 1" and "Covers, Vol. 2," in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Throughout his career, Fitzsimmons has demonstrated a unique blend of introspective songwriting and musical versatility.
