Theatre is a platform for entertainment. It is a place for laughter, tears and romance, and at its best, it is also a place for debate. The Theatre Royal Haymarket, known originally as “The Little Theatre in the Hay” – designed and constructed in 1720, by John Potter – has come a very long way and is now considered one of the most treasured theatres in the West End. Over the last 180 years, in its various incarnations, the Theatre Royal Haymarket has provided a home for some of the most celebrated events in British theatre history, from the challenging and gritty to the glamorous and classically old. Today, we strive to ensure that the Haymarket continues to provide some of London’s most memorable theatrical experiences for audiences from around the world.
Historically and architecturally one of the most significant theatres in Britain, the last four years have seen considerable change for the Theatre Royal Haymarket, with the continued expansion of the Masterclass Programme and a return of the theatre to the status of producing house for the first time since 1982.
Since 2006, the Theatre Royal Haymarket has also forged a reputation for bringing together some of our most celebrated creative artists under the banner of the newly founded Theatre Royal Haymarket Company. Collaborations over the last few seasons have included actors such as Dame Eileen Atkins, Anna Friel, Sir Ian McKellen, David Haig, Patricia Hodge, Ruthie Henshall, Sir Patrick Stewart, Roger Rees and Toby Stephens.
In addition to this, we are thrilled to have worked with Sir Trevor Nunn for a year of his season at the Haymarket, and whose Artistic Directorship of the theatre included productions of Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, most recently, William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and The Lion in Winter by James Goldman.
We are currently hosting the National Theatre’s sell-out production of One Man, Two Guvnors.
