Akon, born Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam on April 16, 1973, is a Senegalese-American singer, record producer, and entrepreneur. Rising to prominence in 2004 with his debut single "Locked Up" and the follow-up "Lonely," he quickly became a influential figure in modern world music. His debut studio album, "Trouble" (2004), marked his commercial breakthrough. Akon's second album, "Konvicted" (2006), garnered Grammy nominations and featured chart-toppers like "Smack That" and "I Wanna Love You."

Known for his versatility, Akon explored reggaeton and Latin music in his fourth album, "El Negreeto" (2019). Alongside his solo career, he founded record labels Konvict Muzik and KonLive Distribution, signing successful acts like Lady Gaga, T-Pain, and French Montana. Akon's impact extends to producing and songwriting for artists like Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, and Whitney Houston.

Engaging in philanthropy, Akon launched the non-profit Akon Lighting Africa in 2014, aiming to bring electricity to underserved African regions. He initiated the development of his own city in Senegal, set to open in 2026. Recognized by Forbes and Billboard, Akon's achievements include being ranked in Forbes Celebrity 100 and Guinness World Records for master ringtones sales.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a Muslim family, Akon spent part of his childhood in Senegal, later moving to New Jersey.
