Anathema are a British rock band hailing from Liverpool. Anathema were one of the founding groups of the doom metal and gothic rock genres in the early 90s. Although the band have moved away from the doom metal genre throughout their career to a more melodic sound, they remain influential in the genre. The band formed in 1990 and originally went by the band name of Pagan Angel. In 1990 the band recorded their first EP, titled An Iliad of Woes. It was this self-recorded EP that got the band attention from record companies and led to them signing a record deal with Peaceville Records in 1991. In 1992 Anathema recorded their first EP on the label titled The Crestfallen. This album was followed up by the band’s first tour with fellow alternative rock group Cannibal Corpse.
Anathema released their first full length album in early 1993 titled Serenades. A doom metal album, it featured the songs Lovelorn Rhapsody and Sweet Tears. The band followed this record with their first ever European tour. Anathema then had a line-up change, losing vocalist Darren White. Vocal duties were taken over by guitarist Vincent Cavanagh rather than auditioning a new lead singer. During this period the band embarked on a UK tour with rock group The Blood Divine. Anathema tickets sold steadily for this tour.
1996 saw a shift in Anathema’s musical style. The release of their third album Eternity featured not only new vocals by Vincent Cavanagh, but also a new sound. Although the musical style of the album shifted from doom rock to alternative rock there was still a gothic influence to the music. Anathema’s fourth album Judgement saw yet another shift, with the album being even more alternative in style and also showing elements of progressive blues and a 70s style.
During the late 90s and the early 2000s Anathema underwent many line-up changes. During this time the band’s sound had firmly changed. Anathema’s sound became slower and more experimental in the vein of bands such as Pink Floyd and Radiohead. After the closure of the band’s record label the band took a DYI approach to the recording and distribution of their music, releasing their songs on their own website.
Anathema have released a new album titled We’re Here Because We’re Here, and Anathema tickets for their tour in support of the album were very popular.
