The current lineup was formed in 2003 in Montreal, and they released an EP the same year. Merge Records decided to sign the band on the merit of early Arcade Fire gigs, and so they had a deal before the end of their first year as a band.

Their debut album, Funeral, came out in 2005 and was met with a warm reception, appearing on many top 10 album lists for 2005, as well as being crowned album of the year by Pitchfork, Filter and MTV2. It did very well, especially considering it was an independent release with minimal publicity.

The band played small venues for the 2004 Arcade Fire tour (tickets were popular due to growing interest – they even had to change venues to accommodate all the new Arcade Fire ticketholders), and the tour continued into 2005.

In September of that year, they collaborated with David Bowie for a live version of Wake Up, on the television special Fashion Rocks. An Arcade Fire concert in Central Park surprised fans when Bowie appeared on stage with them again. They went on to open for U2 on their Vertigo tour.

Funeral was nominated for the Best Alternative Rock Album Grammy, and they won the Juno Award for Songwriters of the Year. They were nominated for three BRIT Awards, Best International Group, Best International Album and Best International Breakthrough Act.

Their next album, Neon Bible, was led by the single Intervention in 2006. The accompanying tour sold lots of Arcade Fire tickets as they played 25 dates in North America and Europe in mid-November. In February 2008, Win Butler announced that the Neon Bible tour had finished after one year and a total of 122 Arcade Fire concerts.

The Suburbs was released in August 2010 to extensive critical acclaim once again, and it went to number one in the UK, US and Canada.
