Yvette Marie Stevens, born on March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American singer better known by her stage name Chaka Khan. She gained fame as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus in the early 1970s, contributing to hits like "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing." Khan's solo career took off with her debut album, featuring the R&B hit "I'm Every Woman." Known as the "Queen of Funk," her career spans over five decades, marked by numerous achievements.
Khan has won ten Grammy Awards and, with Rufus, achieved several gold and platinum records. She made history as the first R&B artist with a crossover hit featuring a rapper, covering Prince's "I Feel for You" in 1984. Her other notable hits include "Through the Fire" and the chart-topping "Ain't Nobody."
Raised in a bohemian household in Chicago, Khan's love for music was influenced by her grandmother, who introduced her to jazz. In her preteen years, she formed the Crystalettes and later joined the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s. Leaving the Panthers in 1969, she pursued a music career and eventually joined Rufus in 1972.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Khan's career soared with solo albums like "I Feel for You" and collaborations with artists like Steve Winwood and Ray Charles. Despite a turbulent relationship with Rufus, she continued her solo success with albums like "Destiny" and "CK."
In the late 1990s, Khan signed with Prince's NPG Records and released "Come 2 My House." In 2007, she received a Grammy for her album "Funk This," featuring the hit "Disrespectful."
Beyond music, Khan has been involved in various charitable activities, received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her impact on the industry is recognized by her inclusion in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll and her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023 in the Musical Excellence category.
In her personal life, Khan has been married twice and has two children. She struggled with drug abuse and alcoholism, achieving sobriety in the early 1990s. Khan is a vegan, adopting the lifestyle for health reasons. Her son, Damien Holland, faced legal issues in 2006 but was acquitted in a criminal trial.
In recent years, Khan continues to be active in the music scene, releasing new music, collaborating with artists like Ariana Grande, and participating in events like the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her as the 29th greatest singer of all time.
