Kirk Windstein joined the hardcore punk band Shell Shock in 1988, where he met Jimmy Bower, the drummer. They band became defunct when the Mike Hatch, the guitarist, committed suicide later that year. After a lineup shift and a name change to Aftershock, the band continued and started playing low-tuned hardcore punk and doom metal. After three more name changes (Wrequiem, The Slugs, and then finally Crowbar) they released their debut studio album, Obedience Thru Suffering.
The first album didn’t make much of an impact on the music industry, but their second self-titled offering received national promotion on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball, partly down to the fact that personal friend Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Down and Superjoint Ritual fame produced the record. He also sang backing vocals on a few tracks such as Broken Glass, All I Had (I Gave), I Have Failed and Existence is Punishment, as well as providing a new spin on the Led Zeppelin track, No Quarter.
A couple of their singles were featured on the cult TV programme, Beavis and Butthead, which brought their sound to a wider audience. Their crazy stage behaviour was well documented in Pantera’s Home Video 3 and Crowbar’s Like Broken video. This behaviour led to heightened interest in Crowbar tickets and concerts. Crowbar tickets were selling especially quickly for their tours with Pantera.
In 2000, they embarked on the Penchant for Violence tour, along with Black Label Society and Sixty Watt Shaman, which sold lots of Crowbar tickets. On their 2005 album, Pantera member Rex Brown provided bass and keyboards. Crowbar tickets will be popular once again for their latest tour, so make sure you get in there quickly to ensure you see them to their full live potential!
