The Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) is a professional orchestra based in Hastings, a vibrant coastal town in East Sussex, England. Since its foundation in 2016, the orchestra has grown to become an integral part of the cultural life of the region, presenting a wide range of concerts and engaging deeply with the local community. Under the artistic direction of conductor and pianist Marcio da Silva, the HPO has earned a reputation for delivering performances of high artistic quality and emotional depth.
The orchestra was established with the ambition to revive Hastings' historic connection with orchestral music. Hastings had once been home to the Hastings Municipal Orchestra, which thrived in the early 20th century and attracted some of the most renowned musicians of the time. The creation of the HPO marked a revival of that tradition, bringing full-scale symphonic music back to the town on a regular basis.
From its very first concert in November 2016, the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra demonstrated its commitment to both classical masterpieces and contemporary works. That inaugural performance featured Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and the premiere of No Man, a modern composition by Philip O’Meara. The orchestra was joined by the Hastings Philharmonic Choir, establishing a collaboration that has continued over the years.
Since then, the orchestra has presented a rich and varied programme of concerts, including symphonic works, chamber music, opera, and choral pieces. It has regularly featured the works of composers such as Brahms, Mahler, Mozart, and Shostakovich, while also championing music by living composers and less frequently performed works. The HPO has collaborated with internationally acclaimed soloists and has attracted audiences from across the southeast of England.
A central part of the HPO’s mission is to nurture young talent and to promote music education. Through workshops, open rehearsals, and outreach events, the orchestra seeks to inspire the next generation of musicians and music lovers. It also provides valuable performance opportunities for emerging artists, helping to launch and support musical careers.
Under the direction of Marcio da Silva, the orchestra has developed a distinctive style, marked by dynamic interpretations and close rapport between conductor and musicians. Da Silva’s energetic and expressive approach has helped to build a strong bond between the orchestra and its audience, contributing to the ensemble’s growing popularity.
As the HPO prepares to celebrate its 10th Season in 2025/26, it continues to evolve and expand its artistic reach. The upcoming season will include a special performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and No Man, in a tribute to the orchestra’s beginnings. This event will once again bring together the Hastings Philharmonic Choir and the orchestra in a powerful expression of unity and artistic vision.
