Michael James Hucknall is a British singer. Hucknall is the lead singer of British band Simply Red.
Hucknall claims to have been among the people present at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in June of 1976, where the Sex Pistols were playing. His interest in the music scene led to the launch of his career in the late seventies, when he was part of the formation of the band Frantic Elevators. The Frantic Elevators released four singles, including a version of “Holding Back The Years”, which he would later record with Simply Red.
As lead singer and core member of Simply Red, he has become the identifiable face of the band. His face, including his long curly red hair, was featured prominently on album artwork and in videos. Hucknall is also one of the founders and financial backers of the successful reggae label Blood and Fire. He also manages the record label “simplyred.com”.
Hucknall is active in politics, and is a prominent celebrity supporter of the UK Labour Party and is a close friend of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
I traveled from Canada to see Mick and he was on fire. Mick and the band were outstanding. Micks voice was better than ever and the band was spot on. The sound at the venue was really good. It looked like they were having a lot of fun. Nice to see Dave and Kenji getting jiggy on a few songs and the appearance of Ian Kirkham at the end was a great surprise. All in all a great evening. Really glad I made the trip.
Great Event
Nottingham, Royal Centre Nottingham, 23/04/2013
Mick was great as usual. The American Soul gig had a good mixture of songs, coupled with Simply Red favourites and some numbers from the Tribute to Bobby CD. The audience was soon out of there seats bopping about, great atmosphere.
Still a great performer but.......
Newcastle, Newcastle City Hall, 26/04/2013
Mick still has it but could have really sent us all home with 1 more Simply Red song at the end!
The show was short at 1.5hrs and the encore somewhat rehearsed.
It was a great show but to close on Simply Red Money made me think thats what it was all about rather than the fans who paid above average prices!!
