Ricky Gervais is quick to emphasise that he had the most normal family life it was possible to have. He is the youngest in his family, born some 11 years after his next youngest sibling. He grew up in Whitley Park, a suburb of Reading, with a French Canadian father and an English mother, both of whom are now dead. He is in a long-standing relationship with Jane Fallon, who he first met at University College London.
When he went to university he intended to read biology, but changed his mind after a couple of weeks and chose philosophy instead. In Ricky’s final year at UCL he and a friend, Bill Macrae, formed a duo, calling themselves Seona Dancing. They were signed by London Records and released two singles, More to Lose and Bitter Heart, but neither made it into the top 40.
On leaving UCL with a second-class honours degree in philosophy, he started working as an events manager, and later moved on to work in a similar position for Xfm London. It was here he met Stephen Merchant, with whom he was to work on many more occasions.
During the latter part of the 90s and early 2000 he and Merchant were to work on several TV series; he also became a radio DJ and a band manager. Gradually the writing work increased, including Radio 1’s The Breezeblock.
In 2000 Gervais got his own show on Channel 4, appropriately titled Meet Ricky Gervais. The show wasn’t a huge success, but Ricky was having more luck writing material for BBC shows such as Bruiser and The Jim Tavare Show, and he had a cameo role in the Channel 4 sitcom Spaced, playing a character that is thought to have been the prototype for David Brent, the hapless office manager in the series that was to make his name. The Office started off as a cult obsession, but its popularity grew and grew until it became one of most-loved television series of the decade, causing Ricky’s profile and interest in his stand-up to soar.
After the success of The Office, Gervais moved on to write and produce Extras – another Gervais/Merchant collaboration, which debuted in July 2005. Much of the success of this show was down to Gervais’ ability to persuade celebrities to play themselves, whilst allowing themselves to be sent up by the scriptwriters.
He has become very popular with American audiences and is regularly asked to host awards ceremonies and charity concerts. Ricky Gervais’ shows are not as frequent as those of some comedians, due probably to his many writing and filming commitments, so his fans are always looking for the best Ricky Gervais tickets as soon as they come online.
