This band, originally formed in 1976 as the Frantic Elevators, began life under its current name in 1985, when lead singer Mick Hucknall told a promoter that the band’s name was, “Red, simply Red.” The promoter misunderstood, printed posters, and the name stuck (Hucknall’s hair is red, and that’s where the confusion originated).
They have enjoyed a long career of successful album and single sales, with Simply Red concert tickets being very sought after. They released their first single back in 1985. Entitled Money’s Too Tight (To Mention), it reached the top 20 in the UK and American markets and the Italian top five. In 1986, the band re-recorded a song they had made as the Frantic Elevators, Holding Back the Years, and the new sound vaulted the song to number one in several markets. It has become something of a signature song for the band, being performed at almost every Simply Red concert.
1987’s album, Men and Women, and 1989’s A New Flame, saw the band’s sound refine even further, as they ‘found themselves’ and put the final touches to their sound. The 1989 album also included the number one song, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, which catapulted the band to international stardom. Trouble soon followed though as cracks began to appear in the band’s unity. When their album, Stars, was released in 1991 (with Hucknall the lead on every single track), the success of that album took the band on the road for nearly two years of Simply Red tours and ended with a change in the band’s lineup.
New albums followed in 1995 (Life), 1998 (Blue), 1999 (Love and the Russian Winter), 2003 (Home) and 2007 (Stay). Mick Hucknall announced in 2008 that the band would split in 2010, after a farewell tour in 2009 and early 2010. Simply Red tickets are predictably selling extremely well, and for those who want to hear hits like You Make Me Feel Brand New, and So Not Over You performed live, this is the last opportunity to do so.
While the band’s sound certainly fills large spaces, these smaller stages will make the blues and jazz-toned songs really resonate, something Simply Red’s legions of fans will be able to appreciate.
