Stephen was born in Hampstead on August 24, 1957. He grew up in Norfolk, and is known for supporting Norwich City FC. His early years were turbulent, managing to get expelled from two schools and then at the age of 17 getting arrested for using a credit card, stolen from a family friend. He spent three months in prison on remand.
After this, he continued studying and got into Queen’s College, Cambridge, graduating with a degree in English Literature. Whilst studying at Cambridge he joined the Cambridge Footlights Dramatic Society (David Mitchell and Robert Webb of Peep Show fame would later join) and met Hugh Laurie, his future comic collaborator.
His career in TV began with The Cellar Tapes, which was written by Fry, Laurie and Emma Thompson and won a Perrier Comedy Award. Granada Television saw its potential and hired the trio to star with Ben Elton in There’s Nothing to Worry About! This and the subsequent two series (broadcast in 1983 and 1984) established Fry and Laurie’s double act, and led to their BBC show The Crystal Cube, which was unfortunately cancelled after the first episode. The duo went on to appear in an episode of The Young Ones in 1984 and Saturday Night Live.
Eventually the BBC commissioned a show which would become the classic A Bit of Fry and Laurie, which ran for a much more successful 26 episodes over four series. During this time, Stephen appeared as Lord Melchett in Blackadder II alongside Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson and Miranda Richardson, made a guest appearance in the third series as the Duke of Wellington, then returned as a starring character in Blackadder Goes Forth as General Melchett.
The next ventures for the double act were their roles as Jeeves and Wooster (Fry and Laurie respectively), in 23 hour-long adaptations of PG Wodehouse’s novels and short stories.
In 2003, Stephen began hosting what would become one of the most popular entertainment programmes on British TV, QI (Quite Interesting). The general knowledge quiz is presented as a panel show, with well-known contestants from the comedy world and beyond. The show has had nine series so far.
Stephen has also hosted documentaries including the Emmy Award-winning The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive in 2006 (Stephen suffers from bipolar disorder), and HIV and Me in 2007 (to clarify, he doesn’t have HIV himself). He appeared in Who Do You Think You Are?, a family tree tracing programme and explored his Jewish-Slovak heritage. Stephen Fry in America was a popular travel documentary, and he has also narrated several nature programmes. He has a recurring guest role in the American drama Bones as Dr. Gordon Wyatt.
His film appearances include a brief cameo in A Fish Called Wanda, playing the detective in Gosford Park, and a portrayal of Oscar Wilde in the critically acclaimed Wilde (1997), a perfect role for him as an Oscar Wilde enthusiast. He made his directorial debut in 2003 with Bright Young Things, adapted from Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies. He continues to make regular appearances in film, mostly literary cult classics such as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Recently he voiced the Cheshire Cat in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
As if all this wasn’t enough, he is also a big name in theatre, as a playwright and actor. He adapted the hugely successful 1930s musical, Me and My Girl, for the West End where it ran for eight years, and wrote Cinderella for London’s Old Vic Theatre.
In February 2008, he began presenting podcasts (Stephen Fry’s Podgrams). He has also narrated the British versions of all J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter audiobooks, as well as the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. He’s also written his own novels: The Liar (1993), Making History (1997), The Stars’ Tennis Balls (2000) and The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within, a poetry-writing guide.
His popularity on Twitter is phenomenal, and he is one of the original celebrities to champion the micro-blogging site. Due to his influence he is often asked to promote charities and good causes, and often does so as well as promoting lesser-known musicians and artists. When something is endorsed by Stephen Fry, tickets will sell! He is very open about his sexuality (he is gay) and his bipolar disorder, having addressed the latter in a documentary.
His new autobiography is due out soon, and Stephen Fry tickets for an evening of memoirs and excerpts are expected to sell quickly – his status as a national treasure and one of the most celebrated and revered English personalities is unquestionable.
